Internet Explorer will be rolling out a series of changes starting in January to ensure that browser add-ons (such as toolbars and plug-ins) are in-line with Microsoft‘s definitions of acceptable use which includes
a) ensuring users have clear insight into what software is being installed on their computer,
b) users are aware of potential changes to their browser settings such as homepage, default search, and new tab, and
c) that these add-ons don‘t interfere with normal IE functionality allowing users to uninstall software, remove browser add-ons, or change search settings.
More details can be found in the links below but some of the more potentially impacting changes could be as follows:
Default search changes must be made using Microsoft provided APIs.  Similar to Chrome, IE may message the user via a pop-up window to confirm changes to their default search provider.
Enforcement of existing policies that prohibit the blocking of browser dialogue boxes which prompts the user for confirmation that they want to enable a recently downloaded add-on.  Microsoft plans to enforce this on all major browsers, not just IE.  Note Chrome and Firefox already have similar policies for their browsers.
Though somewhat vague, IE will also begin detecting search protect products that prevent users from switching their search sets (which we don‘t allow anyway) as well as products that "discourage" users from changing their settings. However, a search protect dialogue box which gives the user clear choice on whether or not to change the setting or keep their current setting *should* be fine.
